What is Permanent Makeup?

Are you just looking into permanent makeup and are not exactly sure what it entails? We're answering all your "What is Permanent Makeup" questions below.

Overview

Permanent Makeup has many different names: PMU, micropigmentation, semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo to name a few. Essentially, permanent makeup is a cosmetic procedure that implants pigment into the skin to resemble makeup and enhance a client’s features.

History

Tattoos and body art have been performed as early as 2000 B.C. Egyptians, Chinese, Incas, Mayans, Aztecs, and Greeks are among some of the early cultures that began using body art for beautification or status designation. In Japan, it was used for decoration while in Polynesia, Tahiti, and New Zealand the tattoos told stories and tribal history. European explorers brought the practice back to Europe where it became popular in courts in Britain, Russia, and Spain.

Where Do You Get Permanent Makeup?

Common areas to have the procedure include: eyebrows, lips, and eyes, however, there are a variety of other procedures that are becoming increasingly popular.  For example, scalp micropigmentation deposits small amounts of pigment into hair follicles giving a client who may be bald, a buzzed hair look. Areola reconstruction gives women who have undergone mastectomies incredibly realistic areola tattoos.

How Does it Differ From Tattoos?

Permanent makeup is different from tattooing because the devices use a lower frequency, the pigment is much more superficially placed, and typically fades over time.

Today there are many different techniques and styles such as microblading, hairstrokes, Sfumato lips, ombre brows, and dusty eyeliner.
